New York – Day One

March 16, 2013

New York was fantastic. We did all the things you’re supposed to do, we saw the shows, the sights, the cockroaches.

Our alarms went off Monday morning at 4am and the car came at 5am to get us to our 8am flight. The flight to New York is much more pleasant than the flight to London or Paris! I took a refreshing catnap and when I woke up we were landing! Perfection. Once we’d landed and collected our bags we took a cab to the hotel.

Roger Hotel

We stayed at the Roger Hotel, a cute little boutique hotel at the corner of 31st and Madison.

Hotel Lobby

It was really nice. Although after we’d checked in (next to a very angry French couple) we walked over to the elevator and a GIANT cockroach ran across our path! It was huge. Maybe that’s what the angry French couple were upset about? I would have snapped a picture but a man kicked it away and said ‘Welcome to New York!’ Welcome indeed.

We went up to our room, dropped off our bags and hit the streets of NYC.

Shake Shack

First stop? Shake Shack!

Shake Shack Menu

Look at that menu. Fantastic. Sam got a double Shack Burger, Mom and I each got singles. I wish I had gone for the double. Sam also got a Chocolate Malted Milkshake and I got Vanilla.

Shake Shack Buzzer

We sat down under a heater and waited for our food to be ready. While we were waiting a bird pooped on our table, narrowly missing Sam! What a welcome we’ve received from the animals of NYC!

Shake Shack Meal

Mmmmm amazing. It was just as good as everyone says it is.

Shake Shack Shakes

The Malted Milkshakes were not as good as Hodad’s, but they were still pretty good.

Shake Shack Receipt

Yes Shake Shack, we like you. We really like you!

Flatiron Building

The Shake Shack we went to was in the Flatiron District, so we decided to wander around there a bit.

Resto Graffiti

I’d heard from my old coworkers at Restoration Hardware that the Flatiron location was amazing, so we went in. It was pretty cool, very representative of New York style. You wouldn’t see graffiti in the Yonge Street location…

After we’d wandered around the Flatiron District we hopped in a cab and headed to SoHo.

Cabs & Bubbles

Every other car on the road is a cab, and there are cars everywhere. Traffic in NY is nuts. No one in Toronto is allowed to complain about traffic.

Cake Bread

We found a Dean & Deluca in SoHo and went in to see what sort of tasty treats they had! Chocolate bread? Count me in!

We saw a man begging while listening to an iPod… Either Apple has seriously lowered their prices or New Yorkers are too generous. Or he was a big faker.

Like a typical Canadian I was apologizing left right and centre as people were bumping into me. After awhile I stopped apologizing, the streets were just so crowded. I was a hardened New Yorker after just 4 hours in the city.

Crew Cuts

J Crew is fantastic. My children are going to be Crew Cut kids wether they like it or not.

Twitter Skis

Twitter skis? Why not.

Kate's Papery

Kate’s Paperie was fun. Mom and I got great cards and Sam got a cool feather pen and ink bottle for his lovely lady friend.

New Phone Case

I got a new case for my iPhone. Also, shopping makes me sleepy.

After we’d tired our feet and our wallets we went back to the hotel for a quick nap and got ready for dinner.

My Mom’s cousin (David) and his husband (Rich) live in New York so we had dinner with them at Craft Bar. The food was delicious but the dessert was even better!

BP & Chocolate Cookies

(Pardon the blur)

Mom got Chocolate cookies filled with Peanut Butter

Banana Brownie Sundae

Sam got a Banana Bread Brownie Sunday

Sticky Toffee Pudding

And I got Sticky Toffee Pudding (so good!!)

The restaurant was really dark so getting good pictures was tough, plus everyone was rushing me so they could dig in to their treats!!

After dinner we went to see Rich perform at The Stand, a comedy club. It was a showcase so there were lots of comedians performing. They were mostly good, Rich was definitely one of the best. One comedian called Sam ‘tall’ which is a pretty big deal for a Neumann!

By the time the show was over we were all exhausted. We poured ourselves into a cab and immediately fell asleep when we got to the hotel. Good first day!
