Sweet vs. Savoury?

April 15, 2011

When I think of cupcakes, I think of chocolate chips, vanilla, sugar… Not carrots, chives and mushrooms!!

I was watching an episode of Cupcake Wars last night and for the first part of the competition they had to choose two ingredients from options like wasabi, tuna, turkey, olive oil, wheat germ etc to use in their cupcakes. The winning cupcake (to my surprise) was a wheat germ cupcake made with wasabi icing and a tuna garnish. To me, that sounded more like a sushi meal than a cupcake… But apparently the flavours worked well together and it ended up winning!

I’ve never tried making a savoury cupcake before, because I’m more of a sweet fan, but I was looking through a cupcake magazine a few days ago and stumbled upon a Beer Cheese and Bacon recipe with a bacon-cheddar cream cheese frosting that caught my interest.

These cupcakes could be fun to try out, and might be a good starting point for my jump into savoury cupcakes (because, come on, who doesn’t like beer, cheese and bacon?!)

Maybe I’ll leave the tuna cupcakes for another time…
